Scrappers Swept By Spikes

(State College, PA) – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers saw the State College Spikes score three early runs on Thursday night. The Scrappers would fight back and would eventually put the tying runs into scoring position in the ninth inning, but in the end it wasn’t enough. The Scrappers fell for the third straight game to the Spikes, 3-1.

State College plated single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Matt Duece brought home the first run with an RBI double. Stanley Espinal drove in the second run with an RBI single. The final run came on a solo homer from Dariel Gomez.

The Scrappers lone run would come in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Johnathan Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Billy Wilson followed with an RBI double to bring the score to the final of 3-1.

In the top of the ninth inning the Scrappers would get a bunt single from Wilson and a walk from Henderson De Oleo to put the tying runs on base. Eric Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. But back to back strikeouts would end the game.

Matt Turner (0-2) started and took the loss. He went 6.0 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits. Turner walked 3 and struck out 1. Luis Valdez went the final 2.0 innings in relief. He walked 1 and struck out 2.

The Scrappers (7-6) return home on Friday night to face the Batavia Muckdogs. Reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Ethan Hankins gets the start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05.

Early Runs Too Much To Overcome for Scrappers

(State College, PA)-The State College Spikes raced out to an early lead thanks to six runs in the first inning. Those runs would set the tone for the game and would prove to be too much for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night. The Scrappers would battle back, but in the end fell 8-4.

The Spikes would send 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs before recording an out. By the time the first inning ended, the Scrappers were down 6-0.

Mahoning Valley would get their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Brayan Rocchio doubled and moved to third on a fielding error to start the inning. Ray Delgado would then bring in the run with and RBI ground out.

After the Spikes added two more runs, the Scrappers made a run at them in the top of the seventh inning. Bryan Lavastida doubled to drive in George Valera and Jonathan Lopez. Lavastida would also eventually score on a bases loaded walk drawn by Korey Holland. The last run cutting the Scrappers deficit to four runs, but they would not get any closer.

Liam Jenkins (0-1) started and took the loss in 0.2 innings pitched. He allowed 6 runs, 5 earned, on 6 hits. Jenkins walked 1 and did not record a strikeout. Jose Oca followed with 3.1 innings of work. He allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits. Oca walked 1 and struck out 1. Jerson Ramirez then went 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits. Ramirez walked 1 and struck out 2. Tim Herrin pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game. He allowed 1 hit while striking out 1.

Scrappers Drop Back And Forth Game In State College

(State College, PA) – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and State College Spikes brought the big lumber to Medlar Field on Tuesday night. The two teams combined for 24 runs and 27 hits. Unfortunately for the Scrappers, the bullpen was unable to slow down the Spikes bats in the final few innings as State College score 10 runs over their final three at bats to pull away for a 13-9 win.

The Scrappers offense was paced early on by George Valeri. In the top of the first inning, Valeri opened the scoring with an RBI double. He added two more runs on a two run single in the top of the third inning. Valeri then capped his RBI total for the night with a three run homerun in the top of the fifth inning.

The Scrappers held a 6-3 lead when they turned the game over to the bullpen in the sixth inning. The Spikes bats would come alive at that point. State College would score a single run in the sixth inning before scoring three in the seventh and then breaking the game open with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Carlos Vargas started and took a no decision. He allowed 3 earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Vargas walked 1 and struck out 2. Francis Cespedes followed with 1.1 innings of work. He allowed 3 earned runs on 1 hit. Cespedes walked 4 and struck out 1. Juan Paredes (1-1) took the loss in 0.2 innings of relief. Paredes allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 and did not record a strike out. Luis Sanchez went the final inning in relief. He allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit. Sanchez walked 2.
